Every MacDill PCS thread on Reddit includes some version of "how's the commute from [neighborhood]?" The answers are usually vague — "not bad" or "it depends on traffic." With 23+ years of real estate experience helping military families settle near MacDill, I can give you actual numbers. Here's the real commute data.

How Do You Get to MacDill AFB?

MacDill sits on a peninsula that sticks south into Tampa Bay. There's essentially one way in and one way out: Dale Mabry Highway and its connecting roads running north-south through South Tampa. That bottleneck is the key factor in every commute to MacDill, no matter where you live.

Three main routes feed into the MacDill corridor:

• Dale Mabry Highway — The direct north-south route through South Tampa. Heavily trafficked during rush hours.
• Selmon Expressway — Tolled expressway from Brandon/East Tampa that connects to Dale Mabry and Gandy. The fastest option from the east side.
• Gandy Boulevard — East-west connector from St. Pete/Pinellas County across the Gandy Bridge. Your only option if you live across the bay.

What Are the Actual Commute Times by Neighborhood?

These are based on real driving conditions during standard weekday commute hours (0600-0800 morning, 1600-1800 evening). Times are to MacDill's main gate.

South Tampa (Beach Park, Bayshore, Palma Ceia)

• Morning: 5–15 minutes
• Evening: 5–15 minutes
• Route: Dale Mabry or MacDill Avenue direct
• Notes: Shortest commute. Some streets get congested near the gate during shift changes.

Davis Islands

• Morning: 10–15 minutes
• Evening: 10–15 minutes
• Route: Davis Boulevard to Bayshore to MacDill Avenue
• Notes: Short commute but the Davis Islands bridge can back up during peak times.

Brandon (central / Bloomingdale)

• Morning: 20–30 minutes
• Evening: 18–25 minutes
• Route: Selmon Expressway to Dale Mabry
• Notes: The Selmon is the key. Without it, add 10-15 minutes. Evening return is typically faster.

FishHawk / East Brandon

• Morning: 28–38 minutes
• Evening: 25–32 minutes
• Route: Lithia-Pinecrest to Selmon Expressway
• Notes: The extra distance from Selmon on-ramps adds time versus central Brandon.

Riverview (west / US-301 side)

• Morning: 28–38 minutes
• Evening: 25–35 minutes
• Route: US-301 to Selmon or I-75 to Selmon
• Notes: Western Riverview communities (near US-301) get to Selmon faster. East Riverview adds time.

Riverview (east / Balm Road communities)

• Morning: 35–45 minutes
• Evening: 30–40 minutes
• Route: Balm Road to I-75 to Selmon
• Notes: The farthest Riverview communities push toward a 40+ minute commute during heavy traffic.

Valrico

• Morning: 25–35 minutes
• Evening: 22–30 minutes
• Route: Lithia-Pinecrest or SR-60 to Selmon
• Notes: Similar to central Brandon. The school quality makes the commute worthwhile for many families.

St. Petersburg (downtown / Old Northeast)

• Morning: 30–45 minutes
• Evening: 30–45 minutes
• Route: Gandy Bridge to Dale Mabry or I-275 to Howard Frankland to Dale Mabry
• Notes: Bridge-dependent. An accident on either bridge can double your commute with no alternative route.

Clearwater / Pinellas Park

• Morning: 35–50 minutes
• Evening: 35–50 minutes
• Route: I-275 or Gandy across the bay
• Notes: Long commute with bridge risk. Only works if one spouse doesn't commute to MacDill.

Wesley Chapel / New Tampa

• Morning: 45–60+ minutes
• Evening: 40–55 minutes
• Route: I-75 south to I-275 to Dale Mabry or Selmon
• Notes: The most house for the money, but the commute is punishing on a daily basis.

What Tips Reduce the MacDill Commute?

A few things that make a real difference:

• Get a SunPass. The Selmon Expressway requires electronic tolling. Set this up before your first commute.
• Flex your schedule. Arriving before 0630 or after 0830 shaves 5-10 minutes off most commutes. Same for leaving before 1530 or after 1800.
• Know your alternates. When the Selmon backs up, Adamo Drive is the surface-street alternative. When Dale Mabry stalls, Manhattan Avenue and MacDill Avenue offer parallel options.
• Morning is worse than evening. Traffic funneling onto the MacDill peninsula is heavier in the morning. Evening dispersal tends to be smoother.
